Editorial: The Future of Lighttubes in Japan
While not entirely based in the world of Deathmatch Wrestling, we do have news about its future all the same. On the political spectrum, it was recently ruled by virtue of the Minamata Convention on Mercury that by 2027, fluorescent light production will be outright banned in an effort to curb Mercury emissions. For Japan in particular, it seems that the country is fast tracked to do this as soon as 2025; just a short couple of years away.
Naturally, Deathmatch Wrestling comes at the center of this due to the fluorescent light becoming an indisputable icon to the genre of wrestling. Most fans would agree that the distinct crunch and smog of these light sources goes hand in hand with the genre itself. And with Japan’s most predominant companies (Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS & Big Japan Pro-Wrestling) involving Lighttubes to their Deathmatches, it will be interesting to see how they evolve past this implement. Perhaps things go back to the ways of the past with Barbed Wire becoming the lethal weapon once again. Afterall, if it worked for FREEDOMS & BJW’s predecessors (FMW, W*ING, IWA Japan) it should work for these modern pillars of Deathmatch Wrestling in the country. Only time will tell what becomes the next killer weapon of the genre as the world continues to move forward onto more progressive and less hazardous materials in the world.
